Why does the lake ice sing?
When the air temperature falls below zero
the ice shrinks on the surface.
On the underside, the temperature is around 0 °C.
The ice does not shrink as much there.
The tension in the ice that results
can be likened to a mini earthquake.
The vibrations from the quake create strange sounds.
This is said to be the ice singing.
