Lakes become shallower and shallower. 

The natural cycle in a lake means  

that it gets shallower and shallower over time.  

Each year the lake bottom rises by a few millimetres.  

This is the remains of both animals and plants which have lived in the lake,  

and which build up the bottom of the lake.
